Users Stopping Weight-Loss Medications Gain Back Pounds Far More Rapidly Than Dieters

Weight management involves ongoing approaches.

New research indicates that people who come off new weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover shed pounds far faster than those who halt conventional diet and exercise regimens.

Findings released in a major health publication shows that while overweight people can lose substantial amounts of their total mass while using the jabs, the weight is regained at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.

"People purchasing such medications should be cognizant of the risk of rapid rebound weight gain when the therapy is stopped," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain implies a return to original mass in about one and a half years.

Comparing Treatments

The analysis, which looked at dozens of trials involving thousands of participants, compared the results of the injectable medications with older methods.

Scientists emphasize that people who lose weight through dieting generally have a less rapid weight regain—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.

Explaining the Rapid Regain

Experts propose the mechanism of the injections accounts for the heightened weight return.

The injections imitate a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls feelings of fullness.

"Long-term administration of the hormone concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the body to produce less of its own natural hormone, and could diminish sensitivity to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement results in hunger is uncontrolled, making excessive eating a significant risk."

A Chronic Disease?

The NHS recommend the injections for people with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians contend that, given the high risk of relapse, the therapy should be considered ongoing.

This view is supported by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "highlight the long-term character of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like high blood pressure.

User Testimonies

Individuals who have stopped the jabs report a sudden return of appetite.

"It was like something that goes on and I was suddenly ravenous," said a patient.

The struggle is worsened if patients have not adopted lasting lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.

Widespread Interest

Figures indicate that millions of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with desire being substantial.

  • Adoption is more common among women compared to males.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest level of interest.
  • A large proportion access the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Finally, researchers stress that while GLP-1 drugs are effective tools for weight loss, they are not a magic solution and maintained weight loss likely depends on combined lifestyle management.
