Now is right to switch Man Utd's formation - Ruben Amorim states.

Man Utd captain Bruno Fernandes was among multiple senior players absent from the holiday period triumph against Newcastle United.

Head coach Ruben Amorim argues that changing Man Utd's tactical system due to media pressure would have signaled "the end" for him.

Initially against Newcastle United, Amorim moved away from his trademark three-at-the-back formation with wide defenders and instead deploy an traditional back four with two holding midfielders.

Amorim acknowledged this ultimately functioned as a six-man defensive block in the latter stages as his side clung on for a victory - securing only their second-ever clean sheet of the season.

Despite he once notably said that even the highest authority could compel him to change his system, Amorim insists the option to utilize different formations has consistently been part of his long-term vision.

However, he emphasizes he could only alter the tactics when his team were doing well enough - otherwise it would seem as if he was succumbing to outside criticism.

"At the time I came here last season, I recognized maybe I didn't possess the personnel to excel in that system, but it was the start of a process," he stated.

"Our aim was to forge an style. Now is a distinct juncture. We lack a lot of personnel, and we must be flexible, so they comprehend why we are switching things up.

"This isn't because of the demands of the media, or the faithful.

"Whenever you talk about changing the formation constantly, I can't change because the players will think I'm altering things because of external voices and I think that is a disaster for the manager.

"When we are performing strongly in our system, then is the opportunity to adapt.

"We are going to grow into a more complete team because when all the players return, we are not intending to play with three defenders exclusively."

Availability Challenges Persist

Having only two wins in eight games prior to beating Newcastle, it is questionable whether Amorim is right to state his side have been in good form.

He is, though, managing with a severely stretched roster, with multiple first-team stars already unavailable for the forthcoming fixture against struggling Wolves.

That number will rise if playmaker Mason Mount fails to recover the injury that led to his withdrawal from the Newcastle game at half-time.

Skipper Bruno Fernandes is a key name who will miss the Wolves clash, despite the fact he is reportedly pressing his boss to let him to make a comeback after his hamstring injury.

"Bruno is already saying he has to practice," said Amorim. "But there is absolutely no possibility he is going to feature against Wolves. No way. You can write that."

Fernandes' Influence Endures

However, the Portuguese star will likely still be deeply engaged, as while most unavailable players watch matches from a private box, Fernandes was observed monitoring the warm-ups from the entrance of the tunnel before the Newcastle game.

Amorim is sure his leader to continue offering input.

"He is a leader," he affirmed. "He must not be the type of player that when he is not playing, he's silent and offering advice. He's constantly communicating. That is the reason he's the skipper.

"There are bad things at times - the way he moves his arms - but he has a multitude of good things. Even after he recovers, he heads to watch the rest of the squad training. There are a lot of aspects you don't see.

"I'm not sure if he desires my job or not, but he's a born leader. He is a leader."

Recovery Schedule for Key Personnel

Although the precise date for the captain's return - and that of fellow unavailable players like Kobbie Mainoo, Matthijs de Ligt, and Harry Maguire - is uncertain, before the conclusion of January, United will see the return of Noussair Mazraoui, Amad Diallo, and Bryan Mbeumo from continental competition.
